History

The Irish Concrete Society was formed in Dublin in 1973 and now has regional branches in Cork and Galway. The Society is concerned with design and construction in concrete; it promotes excellence in the use of concrete and is very active in areas of technical development, such as the development of Irish and European standards.

The Society is also involved in the promotion and running of lectures, seminars and courses on its own and in collaboration with other organisations. The Society promotes and organizes site visits for members and has an annual site visit with colleagues from the Northern Ireland branch of the UK Concrete Society.

Membership is open to all who may have any involvement in the use or promotion of the material concrete. A particular feature of the Society is the Award Scheme, which began in 1979. The awards are made annually by the Society for excellence in design and construction in concrete Buildings, Structures or Elements and are held in very high esteem. The scheme was extended some years ago to pay tribute to concrete in sculpture. There is also a student prize presented annually to encourage students’ interest in concrete and an International prize to those who export product or services abroad.

The Society receives generous support from both individual and corporate members, with corporate members drawn from organizations in the construction industry, local authorities, public bodies and third level faculties. In addition to financial support through membership fees, our members provide personnel to serve on the various Society committees.
